Fursuit Cleaning!

Standards and general fursuit cleaning knowledge:
-
- Always clean with cool or room temperature water
-
- Always air dry or use cool air to dry your fursuit, fans are recommended for constant air flow.
-
- Never use any heat when cleaning or drying your fursuit, heat can permanently damage the fur on your costume.
-
- Never assume one makers cleaning methods will transfer to another, everyone constructs their costumes differently! When in doubt ask your maker for cleaning instructions!
Below are my personal instructions, guidelines and recommendations for how to clean MY costumes, from how I personally clean all of my work. I am not responsible for damage to your costume caused by improper cleaning and care.

The Head
-
- DO NOT submerge your head in water
-
- I DO NOT recommend cleaning heavily with isopropyl alcohol! Some of your patterns were traced with sharpie, with too much alcohol saturation will make the sharpie bleed! (disinfecting the inside of the head by hand is okay! just be careful of oversaturation. A controlled wipe out should do the trick!)
-
- Try not to get water in the eyes by putting balled up paper towel in them, your eyes are sealed, but its best to be safe.
-
- I highly recommend brushing the short shaved fur on your face and possibly ears with either a soft bristle brush, or a backwards slicker brush as to not damage the delicate short fur and lengthen the life of your suit!
-
- Surface clean the fur with cool/room temp water (NOT HOT) and a little bit of bleach free detergent diluted in water (I personally use “Tide free and gentle” and have not had any bleeding issues, I am not responsible for damage done from detergent brands I haven't used before), be careful with the detergent solution around the eyeliner.
-
- I personally use a “Bissle Little Green” to wash anything that cant or don't want to put in the washing machine, but if you don’t have one, you can wash your head with a cloth, you can lightly scrub areas, and make sure you rinse out the detergent.
-
- If you are really fancy, you can use small scrubs like a clean toothbrush to clean jawsets, or any minky and small areas!
-
- Make sure to dry your head from the INSIDE OUT to minimize the risk of mold (do not dry with heat!) (I recommend using fans)
-
Some heads and costumes will have specific cleaning instructions if special materials were used! if this applies to your costume I will outline all you need to know!
Feet and Hand paws
-
- surface clean your feet like you would a head with the same considerations.
-
- DO NOT submerge your feetpaws in water
-
- Handpaws, in most cases, can be machine washed as is in a garment protection bag or zipped pillow case, do not attempt to turn inside out, you wont be able to. If I recommend against machine washing your hand paws I will inform you.
-
- See below for machine washing instructions and warnings.
-
- If you prefer you can always hand wash your hand paws in a sink or tub submerged a solution of diluted bleach free detergent and cold or room temperature water, NEVER hot. (hand washing is always gentler on the materials if you are worried about the long term life of your costume)

Bodysuits, Padding, and Tails
-
- In most cases your bodysuit can be flipped inside out, zipped back up, and put in the washing machine. If using a washing machine make sure the settings are on delicates, and only cold water is used alongside a bit of bleach free detergent. (I personally use “Tide free and gentle” and have not had any bleeding issues, I am not responsible for damage done from other detergent brands I haven't used before)
-
- In most cases, if your bodysuit has an attached tail, the stuffing can either be removed before flipping the body inside out, or I deemed the tail small enough for the amount of stuffing to not be an issue. Just make sure the small amount of stuffing can thoroughly dry!
-
I recommend against hanging your bodysuit to dry as it can stretch out the material from the shoulders, if you are wanting to hang it, make sure you get as much water weight out of it as possible! Fans are always recommended.
-
If you trust your dryer settings, you can put your bodysuit in the dryer on AIR DRY ONLY, ensure there is NO HEAT. This helps get any excess water out of your costume before drying it standard. I do this myself as I trust my settings. This options is 100% up to individual discretion! I'm not responsible for heat damage!
-
- I recommend hand cleaning your digi padding in a tub, submerging it in mixture of cool/room temperature water and a bit of detergent! Be sure to squish out as much water as possible before laying your padding to dry with fans, the stuffing can hold lots of water so constant good airflow is necessary to avoid mold growth!

-
For tails, if you can remove the stuffing from your tail, you can probably put them in the washing machine either flipped inside out, or in a protective garment bag, feel free to ask me what I recommend! If you can remove the stuffing you can also tub wash your tail. If the stuffing can not be removed from your tail then you surface wash it like you would a head or feet paws!
